What Is Regional Liposuction?

Regional liposuction provides targeted fat removal from specific body regions: the arms, inner thighs, anterior belly, chin, and other isolated areas. It can be performed under general, regional, or local anaesthesia, and most procedures are done as office procedures with same-day discharge. VASER technology is used, providing the same benefits as Lipo-360: reduced post-operative pain, better skin contraction, and faster recovery.

Post-operatively, a compression garment is worn and lymphatic massage is recommended to support healing and optimise results. Dr. Matwa assesses each zone individually to determine the appropriate volume of fat removal for a proportionate and natural outcome.

Key Benefits

Targeted Precision

Regional liposuction precisely removes fat from one or two specific zones, allowing highly targeted refinement without the recovery associated with a full-body contouring procedure.

Minimal Downtime

Small-zone regional liposuction performed under local anaesthesia typically allows return to light activities within 2-5 days, making it a practical option for patients with limited time for recovery.

Natural Contour

Precise fat removal using fine cannulas produces smooth, natural-looking contours. Results integrate seamlessly with surrounding tissue without visible irregularities or edges.

Permanent Fat Removal

Fat cells removed by liposuction are permanently eliminated. With stable weight maintenance, the improvement in contour is long-lasting. Remaining fat cells in treated areas do not multiply to replace those removed.

Versatile Zones

Regional liposuction can be applied to a wide range of body zones including the submental area, arms, flanks, inner thighs, knees, and ankles, providing targeted solutions for common problem areas.

Discreet Access Points

Liposuction access incisions are 3-4mm and placed in natural skin creases or inconspicuous positions. At maturity they are virtually invisible, with no meaningful scarring.

The Surgical Process

1

Consultation & Zone Assessment

Dr. Matwa evaluates the target zone, assessing skin quality, fat volume, and anatomy. Skin laxity is carefully considered, as liposuction without adequate skin retraction can worsen loose skin in certain patients.

2

Tumescent Infiltration

A dilute solution of local anaesthetic and adrenaline is infiltrated into the target area. This firms the fat for easier removal, provides anaesthesia, and reduces bleeding significantly.

3

Fat Removal

Fine cannulas are inserted through small access incisions and used to remove fat using a controlled, systematic technique. The cannula passes through the fat at multiple levels and planes to ensure an even, smooth result.

4

Compression & Recovery

Access incisions are closed with a single fine suture. A compression garment is applied to the treated area and worn for two to three weeks to support healing, reduce swelling, and encourage skin retraction.

Recovery Timeline

Day
1-3

Peak Swelling

Treated area is swollen and firm. Compression garment worn continuously. Some fluid drainage through access incisions is normal in the first 24-48 hours. Rest with the treated area elevated where possible.

Day
4-7

Return to Activity

Most patients return to desk work and light activities. Bruising is transitioning. Compression garment continues. The contour change is already visible beneath the swelling.

Wk
2-3

Swelling Reducing

Swelling reduces significantly. The new contour becomes increasingly apparent. Compression garment transitions to daytime only, then discontinued by week 3-4 as advised.

Mo
2-3

Final Result

All swelling has resolved. The final contour is fully visible and stable. Skin retraction is complete. Compression garment is no longer required and normal exercise can be fully resumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss treatment. It is best suited to patients who are at or near their ideal weight but have specific localised fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. The amount of fat removed is modest in terms of weight, but the improvement in contour can be very significant.
Regional liposuction can treat most areas of localised fat. Common zones include the submental area (double chin), upper arms, bra line and axillary rolls, flanks (love handles), inner thighs, outer thighs, inner knees, and ankles. Dr. Matwa will assess each zone at consultation and advise on the optimal approach.
Regional liposuction targets one or two specific zones in a focused procedure, typically with a shorter operative time and recovery. Full-body contouring addresses multiple zones simultaneously in a more extensive procedure. The right approach depends on the number of zones requiring treatment, the volume of fat to be removed, and the patient's goals and availability for recovery.
