The gold-standard combination procedure - liposuction plus tummy tuck for comprehensive abdominal transformation.
Procedure Overview
Lipoabdominoplasty is an advanced combination procedure that integrates liposuction with a traditional abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Unlike a standard tummy tuck performed alone, lipoabdominoplasty uses tumescent liposuction to sculpt the flanks, upper abdomen, and waist simultaneously - resulting in a more comprehensive and naturally contoured transformation.
The technique is designed to preserve the blood vessels that supply the abdominal skin flap, specifically the perforating vessels from the rectus abdominis muscle. By maintaining this vascular network, Dr. Matwa is able to perform more extensive tissue mobilisation while significantly reducing the risk of wound healing complications - a major limitation of earlier combined approaches.
Lipoabdominoplasty is ideal for post-bariatric patients, post-pregnancy mothers, or individuals who have lost significant weight and present with both excess skin and resistant fat deposits that diet and exercise cannot address. The result is a flatter, more defined abdomen with improved waist definition and, in many cases, removal of lower abdominal stretch marks.

Why Patients Choose This Procedure
Addresses both excess skin and stubborn fat in a single operative session, achieving what two separate procedures would accomplish.
By adding liposuction to the flanks and upper abdomen, the overall silhouette is dramatically more refined than abdominoplasty alone can achieve.
Targeted fat removal from the waist and flanks creates an hourglass contour that complements the flattened abdomen.
Skin excision combined with rectus muscle tightening (diastasis repair) produces a firm, toned abdominal wall that cannot be replicated non-surgically.
Excess skin in the lower abdomen - often containing the majority of stretch marks - is excised during the procedure, resulting in smoother skin.
With stable weight maintenance, results are permanent. The fat cells removed do not return, and the repositioned tissue retains its new position.
How It Works
Dr. Matwa conducts a thorough pre-operative assessment including body composition analysis, skin laxity evaluation, and abdominal wall examination. Precise surgical markings are made to map the liposuction zones, skin excision boundaries, and new umbilical position.
Tumescent fluid is infiltrated into the target zones - flanks, waist, and selected abdominal areas. Liposuction is performed using fine cannulas to sculpt the contour before skin resection, preserving the critical perforator vessels that supply the abdominal flap.
The lower abdominal skin is excised along the pre-marked incision. The rectus abdominis muscles are plicated (sutured together) to repair diastasis and restore a firm abdominal wall. The umbilicus is repositioned through a new opening in the elevated skin flap.
The wound is closed in layered sutures to minimise tension. Surgical drains may be placed if indicated. A medical-grade compression garment is fitted to support the new contour, reduce swelling, and assist with skin retraction during healing.

What to Expect
Bed rest with pillows positioned under the knees to reduce tension on the abdominal closure. Drains managed if placed. Pain is well-controlled with prescribed analgesia.
Gentle walking is encouraged from day 2-3 to promote circulation. Compression garment worn continuously. Follow-up visit for drain removal and wound assessment.
Light daily activities resumed - desk work, short drives, personal care. Swelling and bruising progressively resolve. Continue to avoid lifting anything heavier than 4kg.
Return to exercise and full activity. Residual swelling resolves and final contour becomes visible. Scar continues to mature and fade over 12-18 months.
